Do a soil test to determine what natural amendments your lawn requires. determine what amendments your planting beds need.  Soil Test Kits by LusterLeaf provide 10 tests for pH, and Nitrogen, Phosphorous, and Potash are available in our garden center.

Our expert staff will assist you in selecting the proper organic/natural fertilizer. We recommend fertilizing 4 times a year when first using natural/organic fertilizers. Here’s a easy to remember schedule: April 1st, Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Labor Day.

Use a Ironite to supplement fertilizer at the 4th of July feeding to help with heat stress. After your soil vitality is restored you can fertilize around Memorial Day and again for Labor Day.

If your lawn has a weed problem apply Jonathan Green Organic Weed Preventer (made with corn gluten) the first 2 weeks of April. This product contains natural nitrogen and will give some green up. Do a follow up fertilizer application a week later. Corn gluten inhibits weed seed germination. Do any re-seeding of your lawn in the fall.

Sharpen or replace your lawn mower blade yearly. A dull blade shreds the grass blade and it won’t heal well. Mow your lawn in the cool of the morning or evening or before a rain. Cut your lawn no shorter than 3 inches to avoid diseases and weed germination. Mulch the clippings back into the turf. Compost what you don’t mulch.

Rake out excess thatch buildup in the spring. Thatch will become less of a problem when using natural fertilizers; they restore the positive bacteria that break it down. Clean up fall leaves thoroughly and pitch them in the compost bin. Dead leaves will kill the turf under them and may cause lawn disease.

Re-seed your lawn in the early fall. Natural fertilizers will not damage seedlings. Spray newly seeded areas with Neptune’s Harvest Liquid Seaweed. This product aids in germination and enhances positive soil life.

Water in the morning when possible. Don’t put your plants to sleep with wet feet! Night watering can cause lawn disease. Your landscape needs 1 inch of water a week. Set out a coffee can; when the can gets an inch it’s time to move the sprinkler. Deep water and let the lawn dry down.

Top-dress your turf with 1/8th of an inch in early fall with Back to Nature’s Natures Blend. This combination of cotton burr compost, alfalfa meal, composted cow manure and humates will revitalize the soil. Nature’s Blend works particularly well after core aerating. Empty the bags in a row and simply take a leaf rake and broadcast the compost evenly across the lawn.

Lawn grub problems can be handled organically. Milky spore is a bacteria that’s applied 3- 4 times the first and second year. After the bacteria content in the soil is built up grub control lasts up to 20 years. Beneficial nematodes are parasitic worms that attack the lawn grub. Applied with a sprayer they enter the turf and seek and destroy lawn grubs as well as flea larvae. Beneficial nematodes are harmless to humans, pets and plants.

Natural lawn care promotes healthy turf more resistant to pests and diseases. Natural/ Organic fertilizers release nutrients more slowly than do synthetic fertilizers; they are less likely to burn plants, pollute groundwater, or kill soil organisms that are a part of a healthy ecosystem. Avoiding turf herbicides and pesticides will help assure your family and pets health. Make a commitment to help our environment!

Below are a list of our favorite products we recommend.

Dr. Earth Super Natural Lawn Fertilizer

A superior homogenous blend of fish meal, fish bone meal, feather meal, potassium sulfate, alfalfa meal, calcium sulphate, seaweed extract, micorrhizae and beneficial soil microbes.

This is a wonderful fertilizer. Dr. Earth promotes a hardy root system thereby adding life to your lawn. It also controls thatch build up. Best of all, it contains Mychorriza which growns in your soil; greatly enhancing the quality of environment for the soil that your lawn grows in.

      Benefits:

  • Controls thatch build up by digesting thatch (the organic debris layer produced by grass roots, stolons, and blades). This layer is located between the vegetative layer and the soil layer.
  • Adds life to lawns by providing a broad spectrum of beneficial soil microbes plus three micorrhizae strains. This ensures nutrients are made available to the grass roots more effectively and at a steady rate, even under stressful conditions (such as drought, low nutrient availability, poor soil structure, etc.)
  • Promotes a hardy root system in two ways. First, it stimulates roots to grow deeper in the soil to absort the organic nutrients made available by Super Natural. Second, micorrhizae develop a symbiotic relationship with the grass roots causing the root system to expand tremendously. With an expanded root system, more nutrients and moisture are available.
  • Fast results, plus continuous feeding for upto three months.
  • 100% natural and organic.
  • People and pet safe.
