Houseplants

The lovely thing about houseplants is that they allow us to enjoy a little nature while in the comfort of our very own homes. This helps us not just get through winter, but brings a touch of the outdoors inside for us, all-year round. Pesche’s has a beautiful selection of indoor plants, from tropicals to hardy house plants to flowers.

What is a Houseplant?

Houseplants are simply plants that do well when grown indoors. These plants are able to thrive despite a lack of sunlight, humidity and air circulation. We do not realize that our drastically altered indoor environment, although hospitable for us, is not ideal for plant growth. Those plants grown and sold on a large-scale as houseplants are plants that are able to contend with these conditions. Houseplants are chosen to represent qualities we desire; aesthetic appeal, ease of growth, moderate size and air-purifying properties. One of our qualified staff members will be happy to help you select the perfect houseplant for your home.

At Pesche’s we have our very own tropical conservatory which is home to our vast assortment of houseplants, both blooming and foliage. What is referred to as either green or foliage plants are houseplants that do not flower, either because they naturally do not bloom, or because they receive insufficient light levels indoors to induce flowering. Flowering houseplants will bloom once or numerous times a year depending on the plant and care. Some plants are prolific bloomers and rebloom easily if given the proper care (African violets), whilst other plants might naturally only bloom once per year (Christmas Cactus). Succulents and cacti are plants that are adapted to dry conditions and are thus drought tolerant and slow-growing. For those wanting low-maintenance plants these are a perfect fit!

Plant Care

Although care varies between plant species, there are some general guidelines that apply to all plants. Be sure to fertilize plants regularly. It is advisable to make use of specialist fertilizers for houseplants as these have been formulated to meet the needs of a specific grouping of plants. Foliage plants will benefit from a green plant fertilizer, blooming plants from a fertilizer for blooming, indoor plants, succulents from a succulent fertilizer etc. Carry out the majority of fertilizer applications during active growth, which tends to be when outdoor light levels are higher; i.e. late spring through late summer. Blooming plants should always be given a rest when they finish flowering so avoid fertilizing for a period of time.
