Selecting the right poinsettia can ensure your plant lasts through the entire holiday season, and even longer. When choosing a plant, look for stiff stems with no signs of wilting and drooping. Plants with tight or partially open buds will last longer than those with fully opened flowers. To locate the buds, look to the center of the large, brightly colored leaves, called bracts. The cluster of yellowish-green buds at the center of the bracts should be closed or only slightly open, indicating the flower is young and fresh. A quick check of the soil will make sure it isnt waterlogged, and your plant is ready for your home.
When transferring your poinsettia, protect it from chilling winds and cold temperatures by placing it in a roomy paper bag. Selecting the right plant, along with a little simple care, will keep your poinsettia beautiful for many weeks to come!
Poinsettia Facts: Beautiful and Safe
Although you may have heard that poinsettias are poisonous, worry no more. Studies have proven the plants are a safe decoration for your home.
Studies conducted at Ohio University in cooperation with the Society of American Florists found no evidence of toxicity at experimental ingestion levels of a 50 lb child ingesting over 500 poinsettia bracts. Even at this high level, the plants showed no signs of toxicity greater than that of the environment.
Please remember that poinsettias, as with all decorative plants, are not intended for human or animal consumption. If you are allergic to latex, you could possibly have a reaction to cut poinsettias and other plants. You may develop a rash or skin irritation if you come in contact with the milky fluid.
Not only are poinsettias nontoxic, they are included on the list of houseplants most helpful in removing pollutants from indoor air. So not only will a poinsettia make a beautiful addition to your home, it can help make the air in your home cleaner!
